Aside from the many questions about getting scalp irritation or scalp cancer from Toppik, here is a lesser known remedy for itchy scalp irritation and/or an embarrassing smelly scalp:

Apple Cider Vinegar!

Alright, you must be thinking that we could possibly be out of our minds. Well, let's look into why this natural remedy for various scalp conditions could possible work for you.

Natural Itchy & Smelly Scalp Remedy: Apple Cider Vinegar

Organic apple cider vinegar is considered a food and is consumable by humans. Thus, it's safe to say that apple cider vinegar is non-toxic.

Apple cider vinegar possesses deodorizing and disinfecting properties.

An itchy & smelly/stinky scalp is usually caused by a build-up of bacteria and/or fungus on the scalp. Applying apple cider vinegar onto your scalp can eliminate those nasty odor-causing bacteria and the fungus that causes itching.

In addition to it's deodorizing and disinfecting properties, apple cider vinegar is very acidic thus having a lower ph balance.

Dandruff and oily or greasy hair is sometimes caused by a ph imbalance of the scalp. Apple cider vinegar can assist in restoring the ph balance of your hair and scalp. Using it will also remove build-up and residue left on your hair from shampoos, conditioners, and other hair styling agents.

An Itchy Scalp Remedy Review: Meted Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

If you're suffering from Scalp Psoriasis, Seborrhea Dermatitis, or Dandruff and seeking an over-the counter (OTC) remedy, then perhaps Meted is for you.

Meted is an anti-dandruff shampoo containing a combination of Salicylic Acid (3%) and Sulfur (5%). It is rather strong for an over-the-counter scalp remedy. You will not see Meted in stock on shelves. It needs to bought directly from a pharmacist, but you do not need a prescription. Meted is also available for purchase online at Amazon and DermaDoctor.

Here are the Active Ingredients of Meted: Salicylic Acid 3%, Sulfur 5%. Here are the Inactive Ingredients of Meted: Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Panthenol, Hydroxy-propyl Methylcellylose, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate and Fragrance.

Here are the instructions as it is written on the bottle itself:

  • Shake well before using.
  • Massage into wet hair and scalp.
  • Rinse and reapply as needed.
  • Use at least twice a week, or as directed by a physician

Meted has proven to be an effective treatment for various itchy scalp and smelly scalp conditions. The odor of the shampoo is not in any way offensive. When compared to the likes of Denorex and Selsun Blue, the scent of Meted is rather subtle. Granted, there is a slight hint of Sulfur, but it is masked well.

Meted does stain colored cotton material, so beware of that fact.

Pros:

  • An effective remedy for minor itchy scalp and smelly scalp conditions
  • The scent is rather subtle and not offensive
  • More easily obtainable as a prescription is NOT required

Cons:

  • Stains material

Based on these findings, you may want to give Meted a try. As always, read the warning labels before usage. If you need more information as to side effects and reactions with other medications that you are taking, consult your doctor before usage.

What is Scalp Psoriasis?

Scalp Psoriasis is a skin and scalp condition very similar to Seborrheic Dermatitis. I mentioned the two conditions in a previous article, but now let's elaborate more on these conditions.

Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp Psoriasis is a condition where the skin cells grow too quickly on the scalp and causes itchiness, flakiness of the scalp, and red bumps and irritation. The dry flakiness caused by scalp psoriasis looks white and bit powdery.

People who suffer from Scalp Psoriasis may very well also have Psoriasis on other parts of their bodies such as on the legs, behind the knees and elbows, and on the neck.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic Dermatitis symptoms are much the same as Scalp Psoriasis. The difference is where Scalp Psoriasis tends to be a dry and crusty flakiness, Seborrheic Dermatitis tends to cause your scalp to be greasy with yellow and/or white scales.

Available Over the Counter Treatments for Both Scalp Conditions

*As always, consult your doctor if you believe your conditions are of concern and read the warning labels on products before use.

Common OTC treatments are:
  • Pyrithione Zinc (Head & Shoulders)
  • Selenium Sulfide (Selsun Blue)
  • Salicylic Acid (Denorex, Ionil)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral Ad)
  • Tar (Neutrogena T-Gel)
  • Sulfur & Salicylic Acid Combination (Meted)
